COVID-19 has presented many challenges for everyone. It is easy to think about the now, but are you thinking about the bigger picture. This pandemic will continue to impact the way that companies operate and what the job market will look like post-pandemic. More than ever, this is the perfect time to reposition yourself for your next career move. Whether that be a new job, a promotion, or a salary increase – this is the time to be considering. You are not stuck at your company and it’s time to find your dream role.

Taking the next step in your career doesn’t have to be difficult. Start by considering what your next career move is. Based on those career goals, start to pinpoint skills or attributes of a person in that role and begin to mirror them. With this vision, you can build a personal development plan for yourself to inch closer to your goal. These skills and attributes can be as big as obtaining a masters degree and as small as building up self confidence or public speaking skills. Make each step in your plan obtainable and don’t be harsh on yourself.

Additionally, seeking out growth opportunities may be available through your current role. If there are opportunities to expand your responsibilities or make the experience that you need for your next position, do it! Volunteering with non-profit organizations geared toward your industry are great ways to gain experience, enhance skills, and increase responsibility. Applying for a local board position is a great way to gain experience as a volunteer – it usually doesn’t take up a lot of your time.

Know that you’re not alone on this journey. While focusing on your personal development plan, it’s important to surround yourself with like-minded people and seek out opportunities to dive into your career. For example, if your goal is to become the VP of Engineering, seek out a current Vice President or President and inquire about projects you can assist on. Most career opportunities come from networking – bring a card with your contact information on it. Even if there aren’t opportunities available currently, they can be in the future and your card will be handy.

Networking opportunities during COVID-19 function differently but actually allow you to reach more people during an event. Local and national professional associations (ex. Association for Women in Science) are still hosting networking events virtually as well as summits – which typically have break out sessions, and networking. Find an association that aligns with your goals, and take advantage of all the opportunities that are available.

The last thing to consider is what you are looking for in your next role. Job titles are not the only thing that matter – consider the salary and values. The idea is to move away from things that you didn’t like about your last role. Knowing what you want to make and what you value in a company makes you a stronger candidate and eliminates time spent when searching for jobs. Determine what you want and it will narrow down your results significantly.

The power of change during 2020 has forced us to shift our lives and careers. Don’t let your next move get left behind in the shift. Now more than ever is the time to secure the bag and make the shift towards your next move!
