For employees, the consequence of paying a nationwide going rate based on experience rather than geographic pay bands is lower disposable income for those who choose to be based in expensive areas. This would reduce the allure of city living.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and the impact remote work has on the way we live. But, for now, the only fair way to proceed must be to value your remote workers as highly as your office workers, support both, and understand the various sacrifices that all your employees make, every day, when they show up to do their best work.
