The best companies think about employee retention long before a new employee starts work. Recruiting for retention is a valuable element of an overall employee turnover strategy. It is easy for a manager to focus entirely on whether a candidate can do the job. Equally important is whether the candidate will want to do the job long enough to make the hire worthwhile.
